FAQs

I am new to Kew Gardens and/or new to tennis, will I be able to find parners to play with?
Kew hosts many events throughout the season to assist players in getting to know one another.  Our really popular Wednesday and Saturday night socials bring out all levels of players and many find friends to play with during the balance of the week.  There are also Ladders, Tournaments and Special Events all geared to assist you to meet and play with people you may not otherwise get to know.

How do I find out if the courts are already booked for events?
Look on the website under “Play–club hours” and “Play-court availability”.  The next week at a glance is there in terms of prebooked events such as teams and socials.  Also look at the events calendar.

How do I book a court?
For booking rules see “Play–Rules and regs”.

Do I or my child need to be a member to take lessons?
To register for any junior programs, you must pay the $35 membership fee first. Parents do not need to be members for children to play at the club however as an adult if you want to take lessons or participate in group clinics membership is required. The only non-member program are parent-classes on Saturday morning.

What do I require for tennis?
Proper tennis attire and footwear are required. A comfortable pair of tennis shoes. Sunscreen and a hat or visor is recommended when it’s sunny! There is a drinking fountain by our club house, and the club also has drinks for sale, but we suggest bringing your own personal water bottle in addition to ensure that you stay hydrated. The club sells tennis balls at the front desk, and balls are provided for socials and round robins.  We provide stringing services in our pro shop.

What happens if it rains?
Occasionally we will have a rain shower that will interrupt play. Or rain before a session starts.  If you are unsure if your court is playable or your lesson is still on, first, check this website – the ticker tape on the home page will be updated regularly with important information.  Contact the club directly by phone at (416) 699-1635 and staff will inform you of current playing conditions and lesson updates. If you cannot reach a staff member, a message will be on our answering machine informing you of the current court conditions.

How do I make suggestions to the Board of Directors?
Talk to the club manager or monitor on duty, talk to a Board member, email the board at board@kewgardenstennis.ca, email any individual Board member.  Speak up at the Annual General Meeting in October.  This is your club, communicate to help improve it.

What is there to do after tennis?
Kew has a beautiful backdrop of lake Ontario. One has the option to do a multiple of things. Take a walk, run or bike ride along the boardwalk.  Take in a sunrise or sunset. Head up to Queen Street and enjoy the many restaurants, shops and coffee shops.  AND don’t forget Kew is a really social club – there is always something exciting going on.

Can I get private or group lessons at Kew?
Private and group lessons are scheduled directly with our Co Head Pros Ira Sherman and Rachel Gould.  Please see the “Lessons” section on this website under the “Play” category for further detail.  Or ask for them at the clubhouse and they will assess your needs in person.
